文武両道 The way of the pen and the sword is a samurai concept about the equal study of martial and literary arts. I like the term because it has the idea of balance in it – ryodo – and because 文, bun, is the kanji that starts important words like 文化, bunka, which means culture, 文書, bunsho, which means literature, and 文理, bunri, or arts and sciences.
Budo taijutsu satisfies my martial and culture study, and the practice of English language teaching (ELT) is what I do for a living, drawing from linguistics (a study that draws on scientific method), language teaching pedagogy (an educational science), literature.
All that packed into four kanji characters.
